Who can use the Open Access Network?
Answer: Government, not-for-profit, and businesses in Waterloo
When will the Network be built?
Answer: The network will be developed according to the needs of the users. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2007 for charter users.
Who should I contact if my organization/company is interested in services from the Open Access Network?
Answer: Contact the Waterloo Telecom Utility (c/o the City of Waterloo) or email TEAM Consulting Services at (salesteam@teamnet.net).
Why fiberoptics?
Answer: Fiberoptics networks have a projected life of 20 years or more. Computers and the switching devices at the end of the fiberoptics lines that must be upgraded regularly as technology improves.
How is this like CFU and the network in Cedar Falls?
Answer: Cedar Falls Utilities formed its communications utility 1994 as it already had electric, gas, water and other municipal utilities. The city of Waterloo has only a municipal water utility.
The Waterloo network will be funded privately as opposed to issuing a bond/borrowing from other municipal utilities like Cedar Fals.
The Waterloo Telecom Utility will not be offering services such as CATV, Internet or Telephone from this network (like CFU does). This network is strictly for local “last mile” connectivity to carriers and service providers.
Will taxpayer money be used?
Answer: No taxpayer money will be used for any portion of this network.
What other risks are there for the City/taxpayers?
Answer: None.
